Joe Gallanagh is an Athletic Performance Coach with over 20 years’ experience working with elite athletes in a variety of sports.
Born in Wexford but raised in Western Australia, his coaching career started in rugby league with the Newcastle Knights in the NRL.
From there, he moved to Super League in England initially with Salford Reds before joining Wigan Warriors.
After this, Joe spent five seasons as Head of Strength and Conditioning for Wigan Athletic FC in the English Premiership.
In 2008 he moved back to Ireland to join Munster Rugby as a Senior Strength and Conditioning Coach.
He stayed with Munster Rugby for a further 4 years before moving to back to Donegal joining Ulster Rugby in the role of Fitness Development Coach.
In 2012 he started Enhance Fitness and Health which is an athletic performance focused business that helps support athletes and teams through providing services like Performance Profiling, Strength and Fitness Testing, Programme Design, Developing and overseeing educational opportunities like workshops and seminars.
In this role he has had the opportunity to work in several different sporting organisations. These have included consultancy or education rolls with: Cricket Ireland, IFA, FAI, IRFU, GAA (Donegal Senior/Minor and Ladies Football, Leitrim Senior Football, Kerry Senior Football and Limerick Senior Hurling) as well as working with elite athletes from individual sports like Judo, Fencing, Boxing, Wrestling, and Golf.
He has also had the opportunity to work with organisations like Sport NI, Disability Sport NI, Derry and Strabane District Council.
Since 2016 Joe has been employed as a Lecturer in Sport Science in the North West Regional College.
Joe has a (BSc) Degree in Exercise and Health Science from Salford University. Completed a PGCE from the University of Ulster and in an accredited member of the UK and Australian Strength and Conditioning Associations.
He has a L3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy, is a Certified TPI Golf Fitness Professional, an Irish Weightlifting Association Qualified Coach, holds Biomechanical Screening (Mobillis Performance) and Functional Movement Screen certifications.
He has also worked as a tutor for the IRFU and UK Anti-Doping Educator through Sport NI.
